Friday Fun — Books I Can’t Stand

I thought this was a great topic for Friday!
Check it out!

Friday Fun is a group post from the writers of the NHWN blog. Each week, we’ll pose and answer a different, get-to-know-us question. We hope you’ll join in by providing your answer in the comments.

QUESTION: Is there any genre of books that you just can’t stand reading? How about a particular author? Time period?

wendy-shotWendy Thomas – When one is a writer, one needs to tread very gently when being critical of another writer’s book. We have first hand knowledge of the blood, sweat, and tears that went into it’s birth. I truly hesitate to damn anyone’s work. Having said that, let me say that the books that get under my skin the most are the ones that are:

  • Predictable – saw that ending coming from a mile away
  • Poorly written – repetition, poor dialog, and poor editing
  • Written as a script – seems to be a trend in…

Fanfiction – Or, How I Learned To Write

A really good read for those who used fanfic as a foundation for writing original work…

Fanfiction gets a bad reputation from many, including George R.R. Martin and my own dad. They dismiss it as “lazy. ” As in “go write your own stories you punk kid!”

Let me tell you, there is nothing lazy about writing three 100k+ word novels. And that is exactly what I did when I was in Heroes fandom in high school, along with ~25 short stories, and 5 novellas. I clocked in probably 600,000 words in the span of three years. And you can bet I became a better writer for it.

No, I did not learn how to create believable original characters, but I did learn how to write realistic speech. I learned how to take some deep, meta looks at the psyches of fictional people, and how to write arcs of growth, and how to create chemistry between characters.

True, I didn’t learn how to world build….but I…

Thank You!

I want to first shout out a thank you to my early reviewers of my novel Unbridled: LAB, Ladytuono, and RSO Kent. Thank you for your honesty and feedback. I appreciate it beyond anything a blog post could ever say!

It’s the end of the week, and I hope everyone is excited for the Memorial Day weekend. Work ended well as our company president let us out two hours early today. I am Blessed to work for someone that generous and cool.

I was able to do a few errands: go to the bank, buy some potting soil for my poor Spider plant who has grown out of her old pot, and do some laundry. Husband and I had dinner, and I called my mom. All was good. The only thing that was probably disappointing today was that the baby-making journey still continues, but at least I can party a little bit more when I go on vacation in June to see friends in Philadelphia.

Tomorrow the husband and I will finally get to do some more errands we’ve been wanting to do around the house. I still need to unearth my summer clothes now that the Chicago weather has decided to skip Spring this year. I went into my closet today to grab a shirt only to find sweaters. No, I don’t miss the Polar Vortex at all!

Sunday I will see my client for my at home Supported Living Assistant job, and I have to do some research on something we can do. I hope the weather is nice. Monday, Mom comes out for a visit while my husband grills and I’ll make salad and sides. Then Mom and I will enjoy some suburban shopping. I might take her to Savers.

Memorial Day is going to be tough for Mom and I. I miss my dad alot, and I know she misses him a lot too. It’s been hard but he will be sorely remembered even more this weekend.

I intend on drinking a beer for him and having a pork rib, knowing in spirit he would enjoy those things with us too. And I hope my husband and I can give my mom a day where she won’t be lonely. We will have to create new family traditions now that he is gone.

Blessings and Cheers to all.

5 Great Writing Resources That You Should Know About #amwriting

I’m definitely bookmarking this.

1) Chaotic Shiny:

This site, in reality, is the probably one of the only sites you need. It has like 50+ generators, and has many uses. Great for science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction writing.

2) Behind The Name:

It has a random name generator, name meanings for both first names and last names, and names that mean specific things. This could be used for any type of fiction writing when you need to come up with cool-sounding names, and especially when you want your characters’ names to have specific meaning.

3) Seventh Sanctum:

Like Chaotic Shiny, this site has lots and lots of different generators, including the What-if-inator, and the Alien Race Generator, which includes up to a paragraph of description for each generated result. This is a good website for fiction in general, but especially for fantasy, science fiction (and writing…

Unbridled Update

Yay!

My beta reader texted me yesterday and she’s very close to being done with her feedback, so I’ll be able to start revising and formatting my novel into its final stages. I’m shooting for May 20th for a release date. I’m working toward that and I feel like it’s my own personal iron-clad promise to myself and everyone who’s had an interest in the book.

Let’s just say I’m very determined to meet my goal!

The cover is 80% complete, and I will post it when I’m closer to the release date, and maybe some teaser pics.

I’m sorry for the lack of blog updates but I really am working on things! I shall update again soon.

Thanks,

HK Rowe
